Receive quality evidence-based care while supporting the future of medicine.

A Teaching Environment

In this academic environment, we (patients, admin, staff, nurses, nurse practitioners, and doctors) are always learning from and teaching each other. The clinic is a “teaching unit” and care will be provided in a teaching environment.

What are

Resident Physicians?

A Resident Physician is a doctor who has received a medical degree and practices medicine under the supervision of faculty family physicians, who are certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and are members of the Barrie and Community Family Health Team. Successful completion of residency training is a requirement to practice medicine in Canada. Resident Physicians must abide by the same code of ethics and rules of confidentiality that govern all healthcare professionals.

EVIDENCE-BASED CARE

During residency, doctors are completing their required training and preparing to write the medical license exam. In this academic environment both Residents and supervising doctors are driven to stay informed with the latest health information, practices and treatments.

AN EXTRA PAIR OF EYES

Supervising physicians observe patient appointments through the use of video cameras and microphones. A supervising physician may also accompany the Resident in the examination room during your visit. Video cameras are turned off during your physical examinations. The video is real time only. No recordings are made.

MORE THAN A PATIENT

Most Residents don’t have the typical time constraints of full-time doctors. Because of this, Residents are often able to spend more time with patients. By seeing a Resident Physician you’re also playing a vital role in the education process and supporting the future of medicine.

What if I choose to have a Resident Physician be my Primary Healthcare Provider?

If you choose to meet with a Resident Physician, you must understand that you will NOT become part of the supervising physician’s practice. Please note that patients are NOT able to choose whether they are assigned to a male or female Resident Physician. Once assigned to a Resident Physician, we are unable to accommodate requests to change caregivers.

Duration of Care

  • When you register, you become one of the Resident’s patients for the two year duration of their program.
  • At the end of 2 years, you will continue to be a patient of the FMTU under the care of a new Resident Physician.
  • If you choose to be registered as a Resident’s patient, you are agreeing that your primary care provider is a Family Medicine Resident Physician.
